This report investigates misogynistic discourse presented on YouTube. Developed within the scope of the Observatory of the Disinformation Industry and Gender-Based Violence on Digital Platforms, in partnership between NetLab UFRJ and the Ministry of Women, the study maps out the strategies for monetizing this content. It analyzes how misogynistic channels generate profit through ads, channel members, and other resources.
Advanced artificial intelligence tools were used to analyze 76,289 videos and identify the communities and patterns of the Brazilian “machosphere.” It also examines the means of monetization and what relationship they have with misogynistic and discriminatory content.
With a view to supporting public policies against digital misogyny, the report presents methodological contributions, including the development of models and protocols for mapping misogynistic content. These tools can be adapted and replicated in future investigations.
The report is the second of its kind to be produced by the Observatory of the Disinformation Industry and Gender-Based Violence on Digital Platforms. More information about the project is available here.
