'Fakenudes': new virtual threat in the election, criminal practice has already been used against at least five candidates

Jornal O Globo - September 30, 2024

Federal deputy Tabata Amaral (PSB), candidate for mayor of São Paulo, filed a criminal complaint with the Electoral Court after photos manipulated by artificial intelligence (AI) in which she appears in sensual poses were released on the internet. The criminal practice, known as fakenude, has been used since the beginning of the electoral campaign against at least five candidates. Experts point to an attempt to undermine the credibility of women running for mayor or city council.

Deepfake uses AI to copy voices and faces and simulate people's speech and actions, making it difficult to distinguish between real and fake. In fakenudes, the technique is used to produce fake content of an erotic nature. Women are the most affected.

— Research shows that the main impact of the use of false content about female candidates is their distancing from politics, which directly impacts inequality in representation and intensifies a context of gender inequality, in a snowball effect — says Marie Santini, director of the Laboratory of Internet and Social Network Studies (Netlab) at UFRJ.
